Joining the Board of PiersPark Sailing Center

I am thrilled and honored to be the newest member of the board of directors of PiersPark Sailing Center. Here is a brief overview of what PiersPark is all about from their Web site (http://piersparksailing.org):
Our Mission
Piers Park Sailing Center is a 501(c)3 non-profit community sailing center on the East Boston waterfront in Boston’s Inner Harbor. Our mission is to use Boston Harbor and the seas beyond to provide year-round recreational, educational and personal growth opportunities for people of all ages and abilities.
Our History
Prior to the development of Piers Park, East Boston had the least amount of dedicated green space of all Boston neighborhoods. A key component of this project was the design of a community sailing center to provide the neighborhoods a direct connection to the water.
Piers Park Sailing Center has evolved over the years from what was once a small agency for recreational boaters, to one of the premier sailing venues in Boston Harbor. PPSC delivers a highly effective youth development program to hundreds of at-risk youth every year that has been utilized as a pilot for national expansion.
In 2009, PPSC was named the Best Program for Disabled Sailors in the country, and in 2010 was chosen as Paralympic Sports Club Boston Harbor, to continue our growth as the recognized leader in sailing for people with disabilities.
Our Vision
Our vision is to be the premier organization utilizing the marine environment to deliver accessible, high impact programs to a diverse spectrum of people of all ages and abilities in an inclusive, enriching, and empowering environment.
I was recruited by Maureen McKinnon-Tucker. Maureen is amazing and is the single biggest reason I want to be part of this organization. She is their adaptive coordinator. She has played a key role in the success of PPSC’s Adaptive Sailing programs for people with disabilities. A paraplegic herself from a freak accident where she fell while walking along the shore, she is a strong voice for disability advocacy and has become increasingly more involved in the sport. Working in concert with the Americans with Disabilities Act, executive staff and board members are dedicated to providing the most supportive and inclusive services, ensuring people of all abilities can fully access docks, vessels and possibilities. Currently, 15% of PPSC’s young sailors live with disabilities. The crowning achievement of Maureen’s exciting career was at the 2008 Paralympic Games in China where she became the first American and first woman in history to win the Gold Medal in sailing.
I plan to work with the board and staff and learn from them as much as I can about how to enable people with disabilities to participate in such an exciting, challenging and rewarding sport. I love sailing myself and will thoroughly enjoy the chance to sail on Boston Harbor myself. And when the time is right the one additional thing I hope to add to the mix at PierPark is a strong recruitment of disabled veterans and the necessary swim safety programs many of these vets will need to feel safe in boats.
