Disabilities awareness at Eliot school

From the Needham Hometown Weekly – Jothy Rosenberg, author of Who Says I Can’t, will help launch the Disability Awareness program at John Eliot Elementary School on Friday, January 28. Rosenberg, who lost a leg and a lung to cancer when he was a teenager, was told that he had no chance of surviving. Thanks to early chemotherapy he survived and decided that he would not let his disability stop him from accomplishing his goals. He has earned a Ph.D., became a husband and a father, started several technology companies, and became a competitive athlete.
In his book Rosenberg says his disability has made him more focused, more disciplined and more determined. As a competitive skier, cyclist and swimmer Rosenberg says his disability gives him an edge—it motivates him to prove himself. His January 28 presentation hopes to educate Eliot students and energize the school’s Disability Awareness program.
The program started seven years ago when Eliot parents Jacquie Sherman and Stacie Shapiro set out to help young children recognize that people shouldn’t be judged or defined by their disability.
The local community TV channel also did a video piece on the event.
