Kelly Bruno, age 27 from Boca Raton, FL, is a Duke graduate and now a medical student at UNC Chapel Hill. She is also a world-record holding amputee runner and triathlete, a former contestant on the TV series Survivor: Nicaragua, and the next person we will profile in Who Says I Cant the TV Series.
Kelly was born with a congenital deformity in her leg and had to have her lower right leg amputated at age six months to deal with that deformity. She had a second major surgery when she was 12 years old to straighten out her residual limb. The healing process was painful, as was the 2 months on crutches in 7th grade. The day after the external fixator was removed, she fell and broke her leg at the surgical site – the site that hadbeen allowed to heal over the last 2 months. Back in the operating room, the orthopedic surgeon implanted a metal plate to hold the bones together to allow it to heal again.
There isnt a day that Kelly can remember not playing sports.She started out playing recreational t-ball when she was 5 years old and has been hooked on sports ever since. Through elementary and middle school she played soccer, baseball, basketball and lacrosse on county and school teams, as well as practicing martial arts.It was in the beginning of high school that she was introduced to the National Summer Games, a track and field event for disabled competitors. She entered the 100m, 200m and long jump and finished the events with times that qualified her for the Track and Field World Championships. All through high school, Kelly filled her schedule with both able-bodied and disabled sports.She played basketball, and ran track and cross country for her high school; she also competed in disabled track and field competitions during the summer. She consistently placed in the top 3 in the 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m events at both national and international competitions.She currently holds world records for amputees in track for the 200m and 800m distances, has won gold at the 2008 New York Triathlon and ITU World Triathlon Championships in the amputee division, and was the second amputee to finish the Ironman Kona Triathlon in Hawaii in 2007, setting the current record for the course in the process. In 2008, she was named a ball girl at the US Opena first for an amputee.
Kelly has recently known deep personal tragedy as her father, Dr. Richard Bruno, who was a teacher at Lynn University, was killed while overseeing an outreach mission in Haiti during the earthquake in January 2010.
Kelly is no stranger to TV. In August 2010, Kelly was one of the contestants on Survivor: Nicaragua, the 21st season of U.S. reality show Survivor. She was a member of the La Flor tribe, a tribe originally consisting of players aged 30 and under. She was voted out during the season’s sixth episode where she placed 15th.
Our filming plan is to go to Florida on June 20 to talk to her family and get some of Kellys back story. Then we will go up to North Carolina and on the 21st and 22nd we will get to know Kelly and film her as a student and as an athlete. Then she and Jothy will do a mini triathlon together. Just for this event Jothy is having a running leg made. Above knee amputees do not very often run but Jothy will go for it…who says he cant.
