Hugh began rock climbing at age 6. At 17 he and a friend ice climbed Mt. Washington and got lost in a whiteout. They went down the wrong side and were lost for 4 days, living in a snow cave hugging for warmth. Both legs were amputated below the knees. He built special climbing legs and within a year was a better climber than ever. He got international recognition for his climbing.He also went on to get advanced degrees and set out to revolutionize prosthetics. He developed a computerized knee and founded iWalk to build a powered ankle. He runs the biomechatronics lab at MIT.
